The Punjab forests department has identified 9,800 hectares in villages all across Punjab for plantation to achieve greater area under the green belt. Besides, 3,021-hectare area for the purpose has been found within the premises of institutions, aspokesman here said. The said areas were identified during a survey in an effort to increase the state's "forest cover", forest and wildlife minister Surjit Kumar Jayani here stated.
The department has a target of increasing the state's forest cover that mainly included the trees outside forests up to 15% by 2020 underits 'Greening Punjab' mission, the minister said.
