Mumbai's Vile Parle woman, sibling pull down bike-borne snatchers, beat 'em black & blue.
It was a perfect example of working in unison. Sisters Margaret D’Souza, 38, and Florence D’Souza, 36, overpowered two chain snatchers on Sunday morning while they were walking towards a bus stop on LJ Road from St Michael’s church in Mahim after the morning prayers.
It was around 7.45am. The sisters, both housewives, were busy chatting on their way when they saw two persons on a bike coming close to them. Before they could realise, the pillion rider tried to snatch Margaret’s chains.

“I had worn two chains — one was of gold and the other was ordinary. The biker slowed down beside us and his pillion rider tried to snatch both my chains.”
But the bikers were in for surprise. The two sisters got into action impromptu and started pulling the duo. “We used all our strength and pulled them. They tried to knock us down and hurt us by shoving the bike on us, but we were much stronger than them. We pulled them down and started beating them,” said Margaret, a resident of Vile Parle.
When the chain snatchers tried to flee, the women caught them and yelled for help. “Then, people started gathering to help us,” added Margaret.
Soon, the police came and took the duo into their custody. The accused, Arif Shaikh, 27, and Shahbaz Shaikh, 38, were charged for robbery and attempt to cause hurt.
Senior inspector of Mahim police station Avinash Sonawane said, “It was a combined effort by the sisters, the public and the police. It is good to see greater awareness, bravery and presence of mind among the public. The two men belong to Nagpada and have records of theft.”
