Don't have a voter card? Just dial toll-free number 1950, get registered as a voter and receive an election photo identity card (EPIC) while sitting at home anywhere in Punjab. The facility, introduced in urban areas, will cost the applicant just Rs. 50.
Speaking to Hindustan Times on the phone, additional chief electoral officer, Punjab, Raminder Singh said the Election Commission (EC) of India had recently introduced the 'EPIC at home' service to make the voter registration process and the EPIC delivery system a hassle-free exercise.
The ECI, in a June 17 communiqué, said applicants in urban and metropolitan areas should call at 1950 (throughout Punjab) to submit details such as name, address and contact number. Besides, the applicant would have to specify the time slot when he or she wants the EC facilitator to pay a visit. The call centre would, in turn, forward such request to the facilitator concerned.
The facilitators would visit the callers' houses at the prefixed time, get requisite forms filled and collect Rs. 50 per form from the voter concerned for the service provided. The facilitator would hand over the form at the office of the electoral registration officer (ERO) concerned.
Subsequently, the EPIC would be prepared and the facilitator would deliver it to the voter within one day after receiving it from the ERO's office.
The EC communiqué said the EROs concerned would induct facilitators, who would be matriculate, unemployed youths of the district or locality having his/her own vehicle and mobile phone. They should be able to read, write and understand vernacular language and English to the effect of getting voter registration form filled correctly. The amount collected from voters would be retained entirely by them.
"We have asked all EROs to immediately identify facilitators in their areas even as the facility has already been introduced with existing staffers," district election officer Shruti Singh said.
The facility is expected to benefit citizens who face inconvenience while getting themselves enrolled in the electoral rolls, especially when a formal drive to prepare votes is not in progress, and lack awareness about the procedure and the authority concerned.
