LG Announces World’s Highest Resolution Smartphone Screen

Written By Unknown on August 21, 2013 | 4:46:00 AM

Last month, South Korean tech giant LG made tech news headlines after unveiling the world’s thinnest high-definition LCD screen. It appears that LG has already outdone itself, sending out a press release earlier today that introduces a new panel that is not only thinner, but also boasts the highest pixel count ever seen in a smartphone-sized display.

The new 5.5-inch screen has an incredible 2560 x 1440 pixels and packs an industry-leading 538 pixels per inch (PPI). To put those numbers into perspective, the Samsung Galaxy S4, HTC One, and LG G2 each have only 1920 x 1080 full-HD display panels – yet are considered by many include some of the brightest, most colorful displays available on the current smartphone market. As for PPI, the HTC One leads with 468 – still falling short of the new LG panel. The S4 and G2 have 441 and 423 PPI, respectively.

LG calls the new technology “Quad HD” as it boasts four times more pixels than ordinary 1280 x 720 HD displays. “This advancement will enable consumers to fully enjoy more life-like and crisp images, and even Blu-ray equivalent video, on their smartphones,” said the official press release from LG.

The press release continued: “In addition, the new Quad HD panel will enable users to enjoy a full view of PC-version web pages at a single glance without image distortion; a contrast to current Full HD displays which only realize 3/4th of a full screen. Also, even when enlarging the screen, users will be able to enjoy undistorted and sharper text.”

Additionally, LG’s new screen is only 1.21 mm thick with a razor-thin 1.2 mm bezel – making it the world’s thinnest and narrowest. It is 12 percent thinner than the previously record-breaking screen that LG showed off last month, which was 2.2 mm thick with a 2.3 mm bezel.

Not only will the screen have incredibly dense pixels, but it will also be bright. “Thanks to its use of AH-IPS tech and Low Temperature Poly-Silicon (LTPS) substrate, the screen features 430 nits of brightness,” said Endgadget.

LG’s latest ultra-high-definition screen might seem like overkill to some – but consumers are undeniably hungry for thin, lightweight gadgets that don’t compromise size for pixel count.

“Is the world ready for a phone with a display sporting four times the resolution of the current Full-HD screens we see now? You bet it is. 1280 x 720 is so 2013,” stated Android Central.
