Irrfan Khan's ‘The Lunchbox’ Should be India’s entry to Oscars: Karan Johar

Written By Unknown on August 26, 2013 | 12:42:00 AM

Filmmaker Karan Johar who is busy promoting Irrfan Khan starrer "The Lunchbox" feels it is an apt choice for India's entry to the Oscars.

At a press conference on Friday, KJo replied to media's question whether the uncanny love story should make it to the prestigious academy awards saying, "As far as Oscars is concerned, it is not up to us. It's (the decision is) upon the FFI (Film Federation of India). We can only communicate. They (FFI) have a certain positioning when they choose they look into potential world cinema films."

"We can only say that yes, this should be a frontrunner, and India should look at it in its selection very carefully," reported IANS.

The ecstatic producer relished the fact that the prestigious film which already had several global producers was associated with his banner Dharma Productions.

"There are films which are most superior in content, absolutely brilliant in its storytelling. When I saw 'The Lunchbox' I wished that my name was associated with it, and that has happened.

"I feel proud seeing such a film as an audience member and a filmmaker because I know that I am not capable of making such a film. So if my name gets associated in this way, then I am happier and I think it's a good way forward for the company," said Johar.

"The Luchbox" which is about a romance between a senior government official and a bored housewife spinning from a mistaken lunchbox has received international acclaim at Cannes Film festival 2013, winning the Critics Week Viewers Choice Award.

The power-packed cast of the film includes Irfan Khan, Nimrat Kaur and Nawazuddin Siddiqui.

Karan revealed that he was moved with the beautiful love story that the film offered and wished some day to have a similar affair.

"I wish to have a love story like Irrfan and Nimrat Kaur in the film. My love story is there only with my mother as of now. I have been waiting to get a lunch box (from a lady)...I hope it comes," the filmmaker was quoted by Press Trust of India (PTI).

The film is set to release on 20 September in India.

'Main Houn Shahid Afridi' hits cinemas despite cricketer's objections

Written By Unknown on August 24, 2013 | 2:28:00 AM

KARACHI: Pakistani film about a boy emulating the fairytale career of cricket star Shahid Afridi hit cinemas Friday despite objections from the player over "obscene" scenes he fears could damage his image.

The $1 million Pakistan-made movie "Main Houn Shahid Afridi" ("I am Shahid Afridi") tells the story of a young man who dreams of becoming as great a player as Afridi, and the trials he faces as he tries to follow in his hero's footsteps.

The big-hitting all-rounder had given his blessing to the producers, but last week reacted angrily to an "obscene" scene shown in trailers for the film in which the hero hugs and kisses a girl in a nightclub.

He also raised objections to an "item song", a musical performance featuring Pakistani actress Mathira Khan. Dance numbers such as this with scantily clad women are often used in Indian cinema and have little to do with the story.

"I had given permission for the film with an aim to give kids some positive healthy entertainment, to divert their minds towards cricket and it should not have obscene things," said Afridi, 33.

But the filmmakers went ahead with the release without removing the scenes.

"The item song was the demand and if Afridi had any objections, it's his mindset," Mathira told reporters at a private premier of the film Wednesday night.

Cinema-goers had mixed reaction to the movie.

"I don't see any obscenity in the film," said 27-year-old shopkeeper Liaqat Khan. "If we can watch Indian movies in our cinemas which are full of objectionable scenes, why can't we watch this film."

But middle-aged housewife Samina Ali said she was embarrassed after waching the movie.

"I came here on the insistence of my kids who are die-hard fans of Afridi, but this film cannot be watched with kids," she said.

Afridi, who hails from Pakistan's deeply conservative tribal district of Khyber on the Afghan border, has so far played 27 Tests, 354 one-days and 59 Twenty20 matches for Pakistan.

He became an instant hero when he hit a 37-ball century in only his second one-day against Sri Lanka in 1996 -- still a world record.

Afridi also holds the record for hitting the most sixes in one-day international cricket, with 308 in 354 matches.

Pakistan's film industry has been on the skids for years, unable to compete with India's Bollywood.

But filmmakers are hoping the phenomenal popularity of one of the country's best-loved cricketers will translate into takings at the box office. (AFP)

'The Feel of Kashmir' by Zubin Mehta

Written By Unknown on August 23, 2013 | 4:02:00 AM

Kashmir will soon reverberate with western classical music played to the baton of renowned music conductor of international repute, Zubin Mehta. He will travel to Kashmir, his second visit since 1970s, to perform at the historic Shalimar Bagh in Srinagar on September 7. He will conduct a strong team of over 100 musicians.

The idea of a western classical music concert in Kashmir took root last year when Mehta visited Delhi. The Indian-born musician had then announced at a State reception at the German Embassy: "I wish one day I could play in Kashmir. I will cancel every appointment to come and do that."
Mehta has spoken nostalgically of a trip he made to Kashmir and the mountainous Ladakh region with his wife Nancy Kovack and their children in 1974.

The event titled ‘Ehsaas-e-Kashmir’ (The Feel of Kashmir) is being organized by German Embassy in India with the assistance of Central and J&K governments.

Talking to media-persons here on Thursday, German Ambassador Michael Steiner declared that the concert is for the people of Kashmir. The event has materialized after his prolonged interactions with cross-section of people in Kashmir from different walks of life. This is a wonderful cultural tribute to Kashmir and its warm-hearted people, he added.

“We want to reach to people of Kashmir through this concert with a message of hope and encouragement,” he said.

However, he refused to define the event as a peace effort.

Declaring it as a purely cultural programme, he said that the programme has nothing about politics and classical diplomacy. “It is more about an effort from one part of the civil society to reach out to another part of the civil society and an attempt to connect with the people of Kashmir.”

Steiner, who was flanked by noted Santoor player Pandit Bhajan Sopori and Bashir Ahmed Bhat, Secretary, J&K Cultural Academy, said the Zubin Mehta concert is part of a broader engagement. The concert will be all inclusive and deliver a unique message connecting Kashmiris with the rest of the world.

Terming it as a landmark event in the modern history of Kashmir, he said that it will be a full-fledged classical concert, broadcast and telecast live all over India and in Europe and will be professionally recorded. While Doordarshan will be the India head for live coverage, European Broadcasting Union will receive feed signals in Europe from India’s official broadcaster.

This, he felt, would connect Kashmir with rest of India and the world. Asked about the prevailing ground realities in Kashmir, he said that there is no doubt that the region has recorded noticeable progress over the past few years. The developments are heading towards a positive direction.
What after this high-profile concert? He said that the need of the hour is not to go for one-off events. “We should adopt a holistic approach as such events can contribute a lot in the overall development of Kashmir,” he further said.

Bhat said that this event will promote Kashmir and India as a whole on the tourism map of the world. He elaborated on the logistic support being provided by the State government in organizing this event.

'Biriyani': Yuvan's 100th Music Album Officially Launched

Written By Unknown on August 21, 2013 | 7:41:00 AM

The audio of composer Yuvan Shankar Raja's 100th album "Biriyani" was officially launched at an FM station in a low-key affair on Wednesday (21 August).

The music of "Biriyani", starring Karthi-Hansika, was scheduled to be launched on the eve of Yuvan's birthday on 31 August. But the songs of the film were illegally leaked online on 16 August, two weeks ahead of its official launch.

Following this, the "Biriyani" team including film's director Venkat Prabhu, Karthi and Yuvan met the CB-CID officer (ADGP Karan Singha) and filed a complaint seeking action against the perpetrators who illegally released the songs on the internet.

The "Biriyani" team also planned to release the audio at an advanced date. Accordingly, the music launch happened on 21 August at an FM station. The audio will hit stores directly. There are six original compositions and two remixes in the film sung by renowned singers including Rahul Nambiar, Yuvan Shankar Raja, Bhavatharini, Tanvi Shah and Devan Ekambaram.

Actor Karthi has sung for the first time in a film. Premgi Amaren (comedian-cum-singer) and Priya Himesh join him for the song "Mississippi", which has lyrics written by late Vaali.

"Biriyani" is the 100th music album of Yuvan Shankar, son of veteran music composer Ilayaraja. Yuvan started his musical career at the early age of 16, but struggled in the initial years as his albums were not well received. He rose to fame with "Poovellam Kettuppar", starring Suriya and Jyothika.

Since then, Yuvan has composed hit songs for several films including "Thulluvadho Ilamai", "Kaadhal Kondein", "Arinthum Ariyamalum", "Paruthiveeran" and "Mankatha".

The audio of "Biriyani" was slated to be launched in a grand event to celebrate Yuvan's birthday as well as his launch of his 100th musical. But the illegal leak of songs forced the film's team to release the songs on Wednesday. As soon as the music was launched, social media was abuzz with messages from fans wishing the composer.

The keyword #Biriyan was trending on social networking site Twitter since morning. The music of the film is already out on iTunes. The songs are expected to be released on YouTube by today.

"Biriyani" is a black-comedy film starring Karthi, Hansika Motwani and Premgi Amaren. The film is likely to get released in September.

BBC rapped for removing musician’s anti-Israeli comments from performance

Written By Unknown on August 20, 2013 | 4:32:00 AM

British violinist Nigel Kennedy told a cheering crowd at the end of a joint Proms performance with the Palestine Strings, a Palestinian group from the West Bank and Gaza, on August 8 that the concert showed how “giving equality and getting rid of apartheid gives a beautiful chance for things to happen”.

The BBC has reportedly decided to remove Kennedy’s anti-Israeli statement from a recording of the Prom that is to be broadcast on BBC Four on Friday, August 23.

PSC director Sarah Colborne censured the decision saying the British state broadcaster is meant to be impartial, according to its charter, and censoring Kennedy’s reference to the fact that his co-performers suffer “a system of inequality and apartheid under Israeli occupation” questions that impartiality.

“On what grounds can the BBC justify this censorship - every word Nigel Kennedy said was accurate and well-evidenced. While we understand why the Israeli government is trying to keep the truth from the world, we don’t understand why the BBC thinks it can get away with colluding in this,” she said.

“Suppressing free speech and political dissent is the norm for state broadcasters under dictatorships. What is worrying is when we start to see this kind of suppression being practiced by our own state broadcaster, the BBC,” she added.

Colborne also called on the BBC to review the decision.

Kennedy had told BBC Radio 4 earlier this month that the “problems of Apartheid” are “extreme” in Israel adding “when it was South Africa people did something about it”.

The BBC has apparently made the decision under pressure from the Zionist lobbies and its former governor Baroness Ruth Deech.

‘Chennai Express’ Box Office Collection: SRK Starrer Become Fastest Film to Cross ₹100 Crore Mark, Beats Salman’s ‘Ek Tha Tiger’

Written By Unknown on August 11, 2013 | 10:52:00 PM

Bollywood's newest release "Chennai Express" has struck another record by crossing ₹100 crore on its fourth day at the Indian box office. Rohit shetty's directorial rom-com has become the fastest film to cross the century mark in the opening weekend.

The film starring Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone has minted ₹100.42 crore in its opening weekend in India.

"#ChennaiExpress Thu previews 6.75 cr, Fri 33.12 cr, Sat 28.05 cr, Sun 32.50 cr. Total: 100.42 cr nett. MONSTROUS Weekend... India biz only," trade analyst Taran Adrash tweeted.

Earlier, "Ek Tha Tiger" was holding the record of fastest film to make over ₹100 crore in just five days of its release in India. The Salman Khan starrer was also released on Eid last year and had earned ₹100.16 crore in those five days.

"Chennai Express" was unstoppable in the opening weekend. The collections declined slightly on Saturday, but on Sunday it picked up. The film has set four records within four days.

1.      "Chennai Express" has the highest paid preview record after earning ₹6.75 crore. It also broke Aamir Khan's "3 Idiot" record which had minted over ₹2 crore.

2.      The film fetched ₹33.12 crore on the first day, which is the highest opening day collection record in India.

3.      It also made the highest second-day earnings with ₹28.05 crore.

The film has also taken the overseas box office by storm. In just three days, the film minted ₹35 crore from international markets.

"#ChennaiExpress Overseas Sat $ 2.3 million to $ 2.4 million. Total till Saturday: ₹35 cr. FABULOUS!" Adarsh tweeted.

"#ChennaiExpress USA-Canada will cross $ 2.5 million today ... UK will cross £ 1 million today ... UAE-GCC will cross $ 2 million today. WOW!"

The much hyped "Chennai Express" is doing pretty well at the Pakistan box office as well. According to Adarsh, the film has grossed $100,000 on Saturday.

Adding the overseas figure, the overall total of the film stands at ₹135.42 crore. Made on a budget of ₹90 crore, the film has earned the production cost within four days of its release.

'Thalaivaa' Box Office Collection: Vijay Starrer Gets Off to Good Start Overseas

Vijay's "Thalaivaa" has taken a fantastic start in key overseas markets such as UK and US.

"Thalaivaa", which was released on 9 August, has raked in ₹77.88 lakh till Saturday (10 August) including Thursday's previews.

"Tamil film #Thalaivaa has taken a super start in UK. Thu previews till Sat total: £ 82,506 [Rs 77.88 lacs]. Excellent!" trade analyst and film critic Taran Adarsh tweeted.

"Thalaivaa" has also had an impressive start in the US as well as in Indian markets. In particular, the film scored big at the Kerala and Karnataka box offices.

Despite receiving mixed reviews, the film has opened well in India (except Tamil Nadu) and overseas markets. According to senior film journalist Sreedhar Pillai, "Thalaivaa" first day collections in Kerala is pegged at ₹1.12 crore from 120 screens.

The film's release is still delayed in Tamil Nadu for unconfirmed reasons. There is still no clarity as to when the film would make it to the theatres. Amid the delay in the release, pirated DVDs and CDs of the film are up for sale which would eat into the film's profit.

Social networking site Twitter was abuzz with messages from Vijay fans requesting everybody to discourage the sale of pirated version of the film. Vijay released an official statement urging his fans to report to the police if they come across anybody selling pirated DVDs or CDs.

"Creating and selling private DVDs is against the law. I request my fans to let the police know, in case they come across such happenings," Vijay said, according to Behindwoods.com.

The actor also appreciated Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa's rule and requested her to do whatever was required to make certain that "Thalaivaa" gets released soon in Tamil Nadu.

"Our Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa has been ruling the government efficiently. She has brought in various good plans for the healthy running of the state and has been working very hard to make Tamil Nadu the number one state in the country.. I like the way she has been managing the affairs of the state," Vijay said.

"I request our Chief Minister to intervene and help us in bringing an appropriate resolution in the release of Thalaivaa.. I request my dear fans to be patient till then."

This is the second time that a Tamil film has been stalled from getting released this year. Earlier in January, Kamal Haasan's magnum opus "Vishwaroopam" faced difficulties in its release due to protests from some Muslim groups. The film's release in Tamil Nadu and some foreign countries was delayed by at least two weeks.

Later, the Tamil Nadu government mediated between the Muslim groups and "Vishwaroopam" producers. A compromise was reached following which the film was released in the state and did good business.

Lights, camera, acting again

Prabhu Deva says he always wanted to work with Thangar Bachan and Kalavadiya Pozhudhugal, set to hit the screens soon, has given him that opportunity

Prabhu Deva has had a makeover thrice in his over three decade-long career. After emerging as a terrific dancer, he reinvented himself as a bankable actor before morphing into a sought-after director. “I have never planned anything. If I did, I wouldn’t have done all this,” says the actor.
In the city to promote his long-awaited Kalavadiya Pozhudhugal, Prabhu says the film won’t be like any of his previous movies. “It portrays a man’s journey through life. The film’s strongpoint is it deals with real emotions. Gut-wrenching at times, it shows the opposition a man in love faces.”
The film won’t have his trademark dance moves and comedy. Then what was the need to play a subdued character at this point in his career? “I began working on this film three years ago, so it is not like I planned it. I wanted to work with Thangar Bachan who has made great films in the past and that was enough for me,” says Prabhu.
After the success of Any Body Can Dance (ABCD), which revolved around dance, one would expect Prabhu Deva to do similar films. “I am an entertainer. My recent films such as Wanted and Rowdy Rathore are colourful entertainers. I would like to continue in the same mould although love stories such as Nuvvostanante Nenoddantana appeal to me. Let’s see.”
Never one to let filmmaking and acting come in the way of dance, the exceptional choreographer is surprised by the level of skill displayed by people in general. “Even kids dance well. It is a healthy trend,” he smiles. What does he think of choreography in recent Tamil flicks? “Like anyone from the previous generation would say, it can improve a lot. But then, everyone has improved a lot.”
Does that mean we can see him play the lead again in the sequel to ABCD? “I am just an actor in the film. I think Remo and UTV have some plans for the sequel but I haven’t been approached officially. I would love to do the sequel. Next year, I am busy with Salman Khan’s film. We will see how it goes.”

Express or passenger train?

Chennai Express keeps you largely in good humour. In no mood to try something new, Shah Rukh, like most stars, seems to like revolving in the same orbit and tries to pretend that he is not tired. Here he has come up with a medley of characters he has played over the years, and the writers (Sajid-Farhad) have merged them into his good old screen persona, Rahul. The dash of realism, if you could call it so, is that Rahul is 40 now.

Director Rohit Shetty’s
So Shah Rukh rewinds to the zany side of Baadshah, the never-say-die spirit of Chaahat and, of course, the audacious romantic side where he chooses parents’ blessings over elopement. Over the years he has played several characters, which start as wimps but end up as all-conquering heroes. Here, he unabashedly does it all over again as a meek mithaiwala who discovers his courage over two-and-a-half-hours of exaggerated emotions and action. The challenge is he knows he is fooling the audience by offering them yesterday’s pudding but still makes them taste it. Of course, he makes fun of his screen name, age, brands that he promotes and parodies the hit songs of his previous films in a way nobody else can. Rohit follows suit in this jolly ride. Known for mounting his funny jamborees in Goa, here his protagonist is also eager to party in Goa but a family responsibility demands that he be in Rameswaram. Rohit remains unfazed as many of the locations seem straight out of Goa!
Trying to put the past behind him as Rahul hops on to Chennai Express he comes across a Tamil girl Meena (Deepika Padukone), running away — and towards him — from the sidekicks of her gangster father (seasoned Tamil actor Sathyaraj). If it is a railway platform and Shah Rukh happens to be there, the Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge episode has to repeat itself. Anyway, the two begin to get close amid the funny clash of cultures and confusion caused by language. The premise opens up several possibilities but Rohit and his writers fail to exploit the fun in the situations. When this train takes off, it does prepare you for an old-world style entertainer where language and ethnicity become a barrier to love, but — be it the presence of a Sikh police officer in a Tamil Nadu village or playing on Rahul’s age — every time you feel like ‘Oh! they are on the right track now’, the narrative gets derailed because of lack of creative fuel.

No, you don’t expect socio-economic discourse from a Rohit Shetty film, nor do you look for authenticity of accents. He goes by types and this time he has generated what appears like a south Indian milieu full of character artistes from the region on a Bollywood set. And from his standards, Rohit hasn’t come up with an offensive gag fest. There is a fairly generous use of Tamil in the dialogue. The timeless message that love knows no language, superficial as it is, doesn’t hurt. In fact, the film is a representative of the healthy ‘give and take’ between Hindi and south Indian cinema in the last few years.

Shah Rukh is a master of melodrama and even when you know that he has done all this before, in exactly the same way, you still fall for his intense portrayal of emotions. However, it is Deepika who has a tougher role to justify. It is not easy to inhabit a broad character like Meena, who is untouched by nuances and Deepika does a fairly good job, reminding one of Hema Malini of Basanti vintage.
But what you do expect from Rohit is seamless, superficial all right, entertainment. In his films you tend to get a bunch of solid character artistes who keep coming up with one-liners to divert you from the flaws in the flimsy plot. Here the dependable Sathyaraj is reduced to a one-note character and Nikitin Dheer doesn’t even get that consideration from the writers. The entire focus is on the lead pair and this makes the journey laboured, for, despite the earnest attempt by Shah Rukh and Deepika to make the silly sound compelling, this Express turns into a passenger train after every few stops. As if Meena’s don father had shown it a red flag! The escapades of Meena and Rahul and their declaration of not to meet again are either too contrived or too convenient to ignore and the action lacks the energy we associate with Rohit’s flicks. By the end, the hollowness becomes too glaring to be covered by Shah Rukh’s presence or Deepika’s charm.

But does Rohit or his star producer need to care? Riding on the festive mood, the film is already safe in business terms.
Genre: Drama/Comedy
Director: Rohit Shetty
Cast: Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone, Sathyaraj
Storyline: A Mumbaikar falls in love with a Tamil girl on the way to Rameswaram.
Bottomline: Only the route and passengers are new, the journey remains the same!

‘Violin is a tough instrument’

Written By Unknown on August 08, 2013 | 9:38:00 AM

Jyotsna Srikanth is a sought-after Carnatic violinist and composer known for her versatility and ability to seamlessly move from one genre to another. Intensely rooted in south Indian classical music and having been coached in Western classical music, she explores the lush ground of crossover music with contemporary flavours. In an interview with The Times of India, she talks about her life and music

Tell me about yourself.

I started learning music when I was five from my mother Ratna. She took me to a concert of the maestro Kunnakudi Vaidyanathan. I was so impressed by the instrument that when I came back home I started imitating a violin using a broomstick. My mother thought that it was the right age for me to start learning the instrument. I gave my first performance at the age of nine. Initially I learnt pure Carnatic music since I come from a traditional South Indian background. When I was 14-15 years, I got into Western classical playing at Bangalore School of Music. I was a part of their orchestra. I passed my exams through Royal College of Music London and then started playing for films. That was a big shift. I have played for more than 200 movies for directors like Ilayaraja. One more big adventure I indulged in those days was studying medicine. I am an MD in lab pathology.

Does being a doctor help or hinder your music?

I moved from Bangalore to London in 2004 because my husband started working there. Before that I was working as a consultant pathologist. In 2007, I thought I should take a decision: music or medicine. I had to give time to my family also. That was the time I quit medicine. It was a risky decision. But I am quite busy and happy in the UK.

What are your upcoming projects?

I am on tour with my project called Carnatic Nomad. I've done lots of jazz fusion and collaborations. I have collaborated with the Spanish flamenco guitarist Eduardo Niebla. On August 17, I am going to perform in Lisbon with a very popular singer Vittorio. He has sung for many Portuguese movies and is a big star there. I'll be in London Philharmonic Orchestra next year. I am also going to work with lots of symphonies too.

Anything you would like to say to our young violinists?

Violin is a tough instrument. In India, it is often branded as an accompanying instrument. To come out of that, you should carve out an identity for yourself as a soloist. You also need to be versatile. Don't give up is the mantra.

Rajinikanth likes 'naughty' lungi dance: SRK

MUMBAI:Superstar Shah Rukh Khan was elated when Rajinikanth called him up and praised the "naughty" number "Thalaiva tribute (Lungi dance)", a special track in honour of the legendary actor in "Chennai Express".

"He (Rajinikanth) called me three days back and he saw the video on YouTube. He said it’s very good, very naughty, very sweet. He said, 'It’s really nice that you have done this song'. I'm very happy that Rajini sir is happy with the song and the family is happy," Shah Rukh told reporters here at a press conference Wednesday.

The 47-year-old actor said that he called Rajinikanth and his daughter Soundarya, and took his permission for the song, sung by rapper Yo Yo Honey Singh.

"As gracious, humble and sweet he is, he said, 'Why are you doing it, sir? You are such a big star yourself'. He said it so sweetly. I told him, 'I am sending you the song and please let me know how do you like it'. We shot the song in a day-and-a-half," said SRK.

"I thought the timing is good. If you don't pay a tribute to Rajini sir in a film called 'Chennai Express', then it is incomplete," he added.

Directed by Rohit Shetty, "Chennai Express" also features Deepika Padukone. It will hit theatres Friday.

‘Chennai Express’ Release: Will Shah Rukh-Deepika Starrer Break ‘Ek Tha Tiger’ Opening Day Record?

Written By Unknown on August 07, 2013 | 5:04:00 PM

Bollywood actor Salman Khan ruled the box office during Eid for the last three years but it's Shah Rukh Khan's turn to cash in on the festive season as his film, "Chennai Express" is set to hit the screens on Eid and is expected to create new records at the box office.

"Chennai Express" is an action-packed romantic comedy film starring Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone in the lead roles. The film has created huge hype before the release and also the marketing strategy has helped to create lot of buzz.

However, it is still doubtful whether it will break the opening day record of Salman's last year Eid release "Ek Tha tiger" which holds the record of highest first day collection with ₹32.92 crore.

"Ek Tha Tiger" was released across 3300, which was the first biggest release ever for a Hindi film. The increase in the ticket price also helped Salman film's to earn the whopping ₹32 crore on the first day.

However, Rohit Shetty's directorial, "Chennai Express" is also set for one of the widest releases in India. The makers of the film have decided to release in 3500 screens in Indian market. Salman's "Dabangg 2" holds the record of highest release ever with 3700 screens.

Last week, there were reports stating that multiplexes have decided to hike the ticket price by 40 percent for SRK-Deepika starrer.

The hiked price would mean that movie goers would have to spend an extra 40 percent during the weekdays and 20 percent over the weekend. However, the hiked price is not applicable for all multiplexes, reported The Times of India.

Despite the hiked price, the advance booking of "Chennai Express" is said to be encouraging. According to reports, major circuits like Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, UP and Gujarat received an advance booking of almost 30-40 percent for the first weekend, and the tickets are selling fast.

Last two weeks have been dull with films like "Luv U Soniyo", "Rabba Main Kya Karoon", "Bajatey Raho", "Nasha" and "B. A. Pass" failing to entertain the audience. Even "Bhaag Milkha Bhaag" has almost completed its four weeks run at the theatres. So, "Chennai Express", which is also a solo release, has good chance of making good business in the first week.

'Kochadaiyaan' international film: Deepika Padukone

Written By Unknown on August 06, 2013 | 4:49:00 AM

NEW DELHI:Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone says her next Tamil film "Kochadaiyaan" is an international project as it will be released in multiple languages like Russian, Japanese and Chinese.

The "Chennai Express" star will be seen with superstar Rajinikanth in "Kochadaiyaan".

"It's not a Tamil film... it's actually an international film with Rajni sir. He is an international icon and I call it an international film because it will be released in multiple languages like Russian, Japanese, Chinese, Tamil, Telugu, Hindi and English," Deepika told reporters here.

She also praised the visual effects used in the film, which is being directed by Rajinikanth's daughter, Soundarya R. Ashwin.

"It's a 3D period film, which captures performance. It's a mix of animation and live action. The kind of visual effects shown in this film have not been showed in any Indian film before," said Deepika.

"Kochadaiyaan", which also stars R. Sarathkumar, Aadi Pinisetty, Shobana, Rukmini Vijayakumar, Jackie Shroff and Nassar, is expected to hit the screens Nov 1.

'Thalaivaa' May Have More Screens as 'Atharintiki Daaredi' Release Gets Delayed

Vijay's "Thalaivaa" will be screened in more than 1,000 screens worldwide. In Tamil Nadu alone, the film will be releasing in more than 450 screens on 9 August.

The film has received a "U" certificate from the censor board, subject to two minor cuts. As per the censor certificate, the film will have a run time of three hours and two minutes.

"Thalaivaa", deemed as an action entertainer, is one of the most-anticipated films of 2013. The film is facing strong competition from Shah Rukh Khan's "Chennai Express" at the domestic (Kerala and Karnataka) as well as overseas markets.

The Vijay starrer was also supposed to battle it out with another big film - Telugu actor Pawan Kalyan's "Atharintiki Daaredi". Due to disturbances pertaining to the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh, the producer of "Atharintiki Daaredi" has decided to push the film's release date further. The producer is yet to make an announcement on the fresh release date.

Pawan has a strong market in the US, where Vijay's film also witnesses good business. The delay in the release of Pawan's film could help "Thalaivaa" fetch more screens in domestic (excluding Kerala and Tamil Nadu) and overseas markets.

"Thalaivaa" has a big advantage particularly in the US. As Pawan's film has backed out from the Eid race, screens booked for the film might be alloted to "Thalaivaa".

The film is expected to have a 100 percent occupancy in theatres during the first weekend. The Independence Day weekend could also help in the film's collections, as there are no big Tamil releases during that period.

Directed by AL Vijay, "Thalaivaa" boasts of an interesting star cast including Amala Paul, Sathyaraj, Santhanam and Rajeev Pillai among others.

The film is produced by Chandraprakash Jain under Sri Mishri Productions. Vendhar Movies S Madhan is distributing the film in Tamil Nadu.

Why Microsoft Founder Bill Gates Wants to Meet Bollywood Actor Aamir Khan?

Microsoft founder Bill Gates in his blog thegatenotes had expressed his wish to meet Aamir Khan, sparking off speculations why he wants to meet the Bollywood actor.

The world's richest person had blogged why meeting Aamir Khan is one of the three agendas of his visits to India. He stated that he would like to "meet Aamir Khan to talk about child nutrition and how we can make a world where all is well".  The other agendas of Gates's visit are to celebrate more than two years of zero polio cases and to discuss how Indian-made vaccines can save lives in other countries too.

Bill Gates in his blog stated that he is looking forward to meet Aamir Khan, the Bollywood star and activist. "I want to hear about his work as a UNICEF ambassador for child nutrition. I also want to hear about his TV show, Satyameva Jayate (Truth Alone Prevails) which is shining a light on some critical issues facing India. And maybe, if I'm lucky, He'll show me a few dance moves."

He also shared a link to the famous All Izz Well, song from the popular movie, "3 Idiots" in the blog.

Gates fulfilled his wish on Thursday and met Khan in a question-answer session held by Pronnoy Roy and discussed in detail regarding better sanitation facilities and the scope of the new Indian-made vaccine Rotavac.

Bill Gates visits the country often and sees it as having an interesting position. "It (India) has both a deep understanding of the challenges and great capacity to help solve them. India's cities are flush with highly educated people working in well-funded labs, as well as extremely poor communities like the slum in Uttar Pradesh that I visited last year. That makes the country an ideal place to understand both the problems and the solutions", said Gates.

'Burka Avenger' set to go global

Written By Unknown on August 05, 2013 | 8:37:00 AM

RAWALPINDI: Pakistan's new cartoon superhero who fights bad guys disguised in a flowing black burka is set to go global, her creator told AFP, with plans afoot to broadcast the show in 60 countries.

The Urdu-language animation "Burka Avenger", showing the adventures of a mild-mannered teacher who uses her superpowers to fight local gangsters trying to close down the girls' school where she works, hit Pakistani TV screens last month.

The man behind "Burka Avenger", pop star Haroon Rashid, said he had been overwhelmed by the response.

"The reception has been absolutely phenomenal, beyond our expectations," he said.

"We were making this little animated TV series for Pakistan but it seems like the whole world wants to know about the Burka Avenger."

A TV distribution company in Europe has been in touch with a view to translating the show into 18 languages, including English and French, and screening it in 60 countries, Rashid said.

The issue of girls' education in northwest Pakistan hit world headlines last October when Taliban gunmen shot teenage activist Malala Yousafzai.

Malala, who campaigns for the right of girls to go to school, survived the attack and last month delivered a powerful speech at the UN in New York.

Rashid said Malala was a "real life superhero" for her courage and said the attack on her had come as they prepared an early episode of "Burka Avenger".

"We were all stunned because we were working on the exact same story about a little girl who stands up to the bad guy who tried to shut down her school," he said.

"I had never heard of Malala before then -- it was like life was imitating what was on our screen while we were developing."

Nearly half of all children in Pakistan and almost three quarters of young girls are not enrolled in primary school, according to UN and government statistics published late last year.

Jiya, the teacher and cartoon's protagonist, transforms into a burka-clad all-action heroine skilled in martial arts to fight against "ignorance and tyranny" in the fictional village of Halwapur.

Armed only with books and pens, she takes on the wicked Baba Bandook and his henchmen, who include Vadero Pajero, a corrupt politician -- something adult Pakistanis are all too familiar with. (AFP)

SRK, Deepika add glamour to DCW finale

"Chennai Express" actors Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone added star value to designer Manish Malhotra's grand finale show at the Delhi Couture Week 2013 (DCW). The show reflected architecture of the 1930s, with resplendent embroidery on women's bridal wear.

Deepika 'towered' above all others in an exquisite deep blue lehenga, which was heavily embroidered in gold and silver thread. In a neat hairdo and an eye-catching neckpiece, the actress definitely made a statement on the ramp, flaunting her perfect midriff at the show Sunday night.

Shah Rukh was as charming as ever and he looked suave in a stylish black suit as he sauntered down the ramp with Deepika and his designer friend Manish Malhotra in tow.

Malhotra's collection was inspired by the 1930s era.

Talking about it, he said: "My collection is inspired by architecture, particularly from 1930s era, when luxury was celebrated in the most refined form.

"While designing this collection, I could imagine a 'maharani' dressed in a layered lehenga-ensemble, embellished with antique gold, walking down a corridor with her entourage."

DCW, a five-day extravaganza, was organised by the Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI). It featured designs by some of the country's topmost designers. - See more at: http://www.punjabnewsline.com/entertainment/srk-deepika-add-glamour-to-dcw-finale/84200#sthash.Z0uTzdeS.dpuf
